Modern Schools Victory

Modern Schools Victory

We Won!

For the past two decades, the condition of our school facilities has lowered student achievement and community morale. Most of our schools were built 70 years ago, and over the past 20 years our schools have been allowed to fall apart.

In 2005, YEA members collaborated with the Full Funding Coalition and the School Modernization Campaign to make school modernizations a priority in the District. We testified at hearings, turned out to rallies, collected hundreds of “Fix Our Schools” postcards, and demanded that the City Council put community needs at the top of their agenda.

In response to intense public pressure from students, teachers, parents, school workers and residents, the Council approved legislation in March of 2006 that will invest a total of $1 billion - $3 billion over the next 15 years to modernize every public school in the District.

We believe that safe, modern, updated school buildings are an important part of a high-quality education, and we are proud to have been a part of this victory.
