Students are the ones most affected by the school system. If we want a better education for ourselves, we must organize to demand change.
We may not have the power of money, or the power of the vote, but we do have the power of numbers – there are 12,000 senior high school students in DCPS. It is our goal to represent every DCPS high school in the city, and to have a membership of 1,000 students.
Membership is open to all public high school students in the District of Columbia. It’s easy to join, and membership is free. Contact us or drop by to check out one of our workshops, meetings or actions. If you like what you see and agree with our education platform, you can sign on as a member.
We currently have 75 members. Over the past four years, our members have represented Anacostia, Ballou, Banneker, Cardozo, Coolidge, Eastern, Roosevelt, School Without Walls, Spingarn, Wilson, M.M. Washington and H.D. Woodson.
RISE
This is our 6-week intensive leadership institute; we hold one every semester. Participants earn community service hours, receive a small stipend, and learn how to be soljas in the struggle for justice. Students who survive RISE become core members.
